The 2012 CLAIU EU Conference will focus on the engineering doctorate in its traditional format together with new developments in relation to its structure. The fundamental characteristic of any doctorate is that it is based on original research and must have resulted in the discovery of new knowledge. Recent developments in a number of jurisdictions include the establishment of the socalled “professional doctorate”.

The CLAIU-EU Conference is organised in collaboration with the Instituto de la Ingenieria de España. The language of the Conference will be English.

The topics to be covered will include:

• Criteria and principles underpinning doctoral studies
• The engineering doctorate based purely on original research
• The professional doctorate
• Diversity and inter- disciplinarity
• Doctoral candidates as early stage researchers
• The role of the engineering PhD graduate in industry

About CLAIU-EU

CLAIU-EU (Council of Association of long-cycle Engineers, of a university or higher school of engineering of the European Union) provides a Forum for consultation and collaboration within Europe among associations of engineers who have broadly been educated to Master degree level.

The objectives of cLaiu-Eu serve to promote the interests of engineers who have followed a more theoretically oriented education and who are concerned with fundamental concepts and their practical application.
